Personal Essays

Paper #2: WRITING A WRONG.

Write a three-page (1000 word) essay in which you react to an issue or situation at Proctor that you believe needs to be re-evaluated, fixed, or was handled poorly. This may be a rule from the Green Book, an inter-personal situation, or an administrative decision. The key to this paper is to develop a clear stance, to look at all sides of the issue, and to suggest some concrete strategies or steps to remedy the situation or to ensure it doesn’t happen again. To be clear, this is not an opportunity to "blast" the school, but is an opportunity to explain yourself and to try and remedy a situation. The language in this paper may be casual, but should not use slang phrases. "I" should not be used, except when illustrating a point with a personal story.

Poetic Journal: Things to Write About

When writing poetic journals, diversity is key. Think about your whole life here at Proctor and try to write about each aspect of your experience at some point during the term. Here are a list of possible things to sketch and/or write about.
sports • social life • class life • dorm life • night life: weekends • family • friends • advisor • advisory • dorm parents • assembly • experiential programs or friends on them • instant messaging • descriptions of campus • unusual events of campus life • New London • Jake's • Pizza Chef • future thoughts

Paper #1: Hoot

Persuasive Essay:

Using Hoot as an example, you will write a 800-1000 word essay making one of the following arguments.

1. eco-sabotage, the destruction of property by vandals, is ethically justified in certain circumstances.

2. eco-sabotage, the destruction of property by vandals, is not justified in any circumstance.

3. eco-sabotage, the destruction of property by vandals, is an effective approach in some circumstances for solving difficult environmental problems.

4. eco-sabotage, the destruction of property by vandals, is ultimately a counter-productive approach to solving difficult environmental issues. In other words, it causes more problems than it solves.

NOTE: This paper involves background research on eco-sabotage and eco-terrorism. You should include at least two other examples of eco-sabotage in your paper to back up your points.

Quotation Responses (Explained)

The Assignment:

Each night that you are assigned reading, you are also responsible to complete a quotation response assignment. Please pick out two important quotations from the reading and respond to each quotation in three to five sentences. Post these responses in separate blog entries. Please give the book/story and the page numbers from the reading at the beginning of each response. Come to class prepared to explain why you picked the quote that you did, what the quote means, and what the quote tells you about the story/book. I will grade your quotation responses on a √+, √, √- scale. I will let you know if I feel like you are slacking on these assignments, but otherwise, I will not normally comment on individual quote responses.

Quotation Response Example:
Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
Page 166.

1) “Death is my son-in-law, Death is my heir my daughter he hath wedded I will die and leave him all life living all is death.”

Capulet is talking about death metaphorically as a person. He is saying that Death has hurt Juliet—that it has taken her maidenhood away—and that death is really his son in-law instead of Paris. Now that death has taken his daughter away, Capulet questions what he has to live for. Juliet was his last living child and now Capulet has no heirs, except for death itself.
